Go Ahead, Be Square! A Square Wire Spring, That Is.

Looking for square wire springs? How about triangular wire springs? Or even trapezoidal wire springs? You name the shape, we can spring it. It’s hip to be square and hot to be trapezoidal.

When we’re not talking about the state of the steel spring market or making bad free–association jokes, we’ve been spending a lot of digital space talking a lot about specialty springs, custom metal springs, and how most springs are made. What we haven’t covered yet are square wire springs. If you’re in the market for square, triangular, or trapezoidal springs, we can take care of you.

What’s the Big Deal About Square Wire Springs?

In our experience, customers that are looking for a square wire spring have a specialty application in mind that requires more mechanical strength than a standard round wire can provide.

We’ve made square wire springs for use in fire dampers, commercial doors, industrial equipment, and more. We can use square wire to form compression, extension, torsion springs, and wire forms.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Square springs deliver greater strength and deflection than springs made from round wire. In other words, they produce more force when moving the same distance than a round spring would. It also means it’s possible to use a smaller spring to generate the same amount of force – which could be very useful in certain situations.

However, stress is distributed differently in square wire than it is in round wire and the distribution of that stress is not as consistent. This means square wire springs may break down faster than their round counterparts.

Need help with figuring out which spring and which wire is right? Our team of onsite engineers brings decades of experience to every project we undertake. We’re happy to help you value engineer the right spring for your product.

Size and Cut of Square Wire Springs

You’re the boss! Tell us what you need and we can make it happen. Generally speaking, we form square springs from square oil tempered wire from 0.192 to 0.412. Our trapezoidal oil tempered wire runs 0.125 to 0.375. Depending on your needs, we can cut springs to a predetermined length or we can ship bulk square spring snakes.
