What’s a compression spring?

A compression spring is a common type of metal spring that absorbs (or provides resistance) and releases force as indicated by a product’s design. When you hold an image of a spring in your mind’s eye, you’re most likely visualizing a compression spring.

Types of compression springs and compression spring names

Tapered springs or Conical compression springs

Tapered springs, also known as conical springs, are compression springs coiled in increasing or decreasing outer diameters. Imagine a sugar cone made out of spring wire and you’ll be imagining a conical compression spring.

Barrel spring or convex spring

These portly, barrel-shaped springs are wider in the middle than they are at the top or bottom. They can be telescoping on non-telescoping. These versatile — and flexible — springs tend to be better at preventing buckling than a conventional compression spring.

Hourglass spring or concave spring

Also aptly named, these hourglass-shaped compression springs take up less space than conventional compression springs and also prevent buckling. These springs are wider at the end than in the middle and therefore, pressure is evenly distributed throughout the spring for better stability.
